1960 Ranking Year (Age 16)

Billie Jean Moffitt (later King), 16 years old, played the singles and mixed doubles events at the U. S. National Championships. She lost to seventh-seeded Bernice Carr Vukovich in the third round of singles. Her partner in mixed doubles was Dennis Ralston. They upset Darlene Hard and Rod Laver in the quarterfinals before losing to Maria Bueno and Antonio Palafox in the semifinals.

King did not play the Australian National Championships, the French International Championships, or Wimbledon.

King played 6 consecutive weeks (5 adult and 1 juniors tournament) from July 18 through August 29. King won the adult singles title with the loss of only one set at the Philadelphia and District Grass Court Championships. Her singles record in the adult tournaments was 15-4. At the girls 18-and-under national championships, she was seeded second and lost the final to top-seeded Karen Hantze Susman.

Lance Tingay at the London Daily Telegraph did not include King in his top 10 women for 1960.

At the end of 1960, the United States Lawn Tennis Association ranked King fourth among U. S. adult players. The entire top 10 and King's singles record against each player follows:

Hantze Susman won 63 points to King's 49. This was her third (and last) title here with the others being in 1959 and 1957. The only other girl to have won this title 3 times was Sarah Palfrey Cooke in 1928–30. Maureen Connolly Brinker said, "Well, it was clear that Karen was head and shoulders above the field. She has great maturity...."
     (2) Connolly Brinker was critical of Victoria Palmer Heinecke's play against King in the semifinals. Addressing Victoria directly, "Billie Jean played beautifully against you, but you had a let-down. You lost your first service game, which really isn't vital, but when you dropped serve again in the third game, it was serious. ... Billie Jean moved in and hit short, dipping angles. You just couldn't hit the ball in front of you. You started to slide backhands to Billie Jean's forehand and you were missing by inches. Your serve left you, and you became despondent instead of trying to reason it out. However, Billie Jean's play was impeccable and as you went down, she went up. I thought it would be the best match of the tournament, but instead it was 6-2, 6-2." World Tennis, October 1960, page 40.

General Note:

Margaret Osborne DuPont, 42, and Neale Fraser, 26, won the mixed doubles title for the third consecutive year, defeating Maria Bueno and Antonio Palafox in the final 6-3, 6-2. This was Osborne DuPont's 36th Grand Slam title, which broke her three-way tie with Louise Brough Clapp and Doris Hart for the most titles. This also was her 25th title at the U. S. National Championships, which remains the all-time record.

Osborne DuPont won her 37th and last Grand Slam title in 1962 when she again teamed with Fraser to win the Wimbledon mixed doubles title. She won at least one title in singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles at Wimbledon, the U. S. National Championships, and the French International Championships. She never played the Australian National Championships.

In 1968, Margaret Smith Court replaced Osborne DuPont as the most prolific winner of Grand Slam titles. Her 38th title was in women's doubles at the US Open.

Singles Notes:
     (1) Bernice Carr Vukovich needed 6 match points to defeat King in their third round match.
     (2) In their second round match, 36 year old "Mrs. Hawton ... was no match for Billie Jean, whose game was at its best." King broke serve for a 3-1 lead in the first set and then held her own service three times to win the set. In 1960, Bevis Hawton was a women's doubles semifinalist in all 4 Grand Slam tournaments.
     (3) Julie Heldman, age 14, was the youngest player in the singles draw, but was only 2 years younger than King. In their first round match, Heldman was "on the defensive from the start and could do no more than try to keep the ball in play." (The combined age of King and Heldman is not the lowest for a US Open women's singles match. For example, the combined age of Kathleen Horvath and Kathy Rinaldi Stunkel on the first day of the 1981 US Open was 30 years, 5 months, and 15 days compared to 31 years, 5 months, and 36 days for King and Heldman on the first day of the 1960 tournament.)
