1961 Ranking Year (Age 17)

Billie Jean Moffitt (later King) played Wimbledon for the first time. Her first singles match was on Centre Court and took 2 days to complete. The much more experienced Yola Ramirez Ochoa, seeded fifth, was fortunate to win the match.

The biggest surprise at Wimbledon this year, however, was in women's doubles. King and Karen Hantze Susman won the title on their first attempt. Although they were unseeded, they dominated their opponents. They defeated three of the top four seeded teams in succession and did not lose a set. They upset the top-seeded South African team of Sandra Reynolds Price and Renee Schuurman Haygarth in the quarterfinals. That team had won 3 Grand Slam titles since 1959 and had just won their second title at the French International Championships in Paris. The Americans then vanquished the fourth-seeded Australian team of Lesley Turner Bowrey and Sally Moore in the semifinals. In the final, only nervous tension prevented them from routing the third-seeded team of Margaret Smith Court and Jan Lehane O'Neill. Smith Court had won the doubles at the Australian National Championships in Melbourne earlier in the year.

King had another disappointment at the U. S. National Championships when she lost in the second round of singles to fourth-seeded Christine Truman Janes. She did not play the French International Championships or the Australian National Championships.

At the end of 1961, the United States Lawn Tennis Association ranked King third in singles among American women. The top 10 was as follows:

..#1...0–0   Darlene Hard

King in singles, [NS]:
1R  bye
2R  lost to [5]  Yola Ramirez Ochoa 11-9, 1-6, 6-2 (35 games) (Centre Court)

Singles Note:
Because of persistent rain, this match was delayed until the early evening of day 3 (Wednesday). The match was suspended after the second set because of failing light. When the match resumed the next day, Yola Ramirez Ochoa constantly played to King's weaker forehand and won the third set easily.

King in women's doubles with Karen Hantze Susman, [NS]:

SF  d. [4]  Lesley Turner Bowrey / Sally Moore 6-3, 6-0
FN  d. [3]  Margaret Smith Court / Jan Lehane O'Neill 6-3, 6-4 (Centre Court)

Women's Doubles Note:
In the final, King and Karen Hantze Susman broke Margaret Smith Court the first time she served to build a 3-0 lead. With their surprising victories over the first and fourth seeds in the quarterfinals and semifinals, the Americans had become a "welded team ...  firm on volley and lethal on overhead ... [w]ith Billie Jean scoring repeatedly on her smashes and Karen cutting up the short volleys." They were ahead by a set with 2 break points (virtual match points) at 2-4 (15-40). But the Australians saved both and won the game. With Hantze Susman serving, they had a 4-3 (40-0) lead, but nerves allowed the Australians to break serve and tie the set at 4-4. King saved their most unlikely Wimbledon championship in the next game by hitting two great backhands for the deciding break of serve. She then served out the match. They remain the youngest doubles team to win a Wimbledon title.

Hantze Susman was in California for an engagement party, and Richey was recovering from a back injury.

(2) Margaret Osborne DuPont won her second and third round singles matches with, respectively, Andria Miller 6-2, 6-0 and Carol Hanks Aucamp 6-2, 6-2. But she lost her quarterfinal match with Gwyneth Thomas 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

SF  d. Gwyneth Thomas 6-4, 6-3
FN  d. Justina Bricka Horwitz 6-3, 6-4

Singles Note:
In the final with Justina Bricka Horwitz, King's "superiority of service and backhand and her more consistent dispatch with the volley" helped her to take a 2-break, 4-0 lead in the first set. The left-handed Bricka Horwitz "plays with the same vigor" as King and "pummels the ball with her forehand," which King "avoided as much as possible." Bricka Horwitz "lays into her overhead and drives her volley and has good pace on her service." She moves almost as fast as King. In the final, however, "she could not control her service weapons under the provocation of her opponent's forcing strokes, and her backhand, under constant attack, was vulnerable. Her chipped returns of service from the backhand found the net repeatedly." Source: "Miss Moffitt Beats Miss Bricka in Merion Tennis Final, 6-3, 6-4," by Allison Danzig, The New York Times,.
