1963 Ranking Year (Age 19)

King accepting her runner-up medal from Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent
after losing the Wimbledon final to Margaret Smith Court.
Billie Jean Moffitt (later King) won all 9 of her matches to help the United States win the Federation Cup and the Wightman Cup in 1963.

King played the formidable Margaret Smith Court only 3 times all year - once in singles, once in women's doubles, and once in mixed doubles. As expected, King lost the Wimbledon singles final to Smith Court in straight sets. The women's doubles match between the U. S. and Australia decided the winner of the Federation Cup. Darlene Hard and King were clutch in defeating Smith Court and Lesley Turner Bowrey 3-6, 13-11, 6-3. In the mixed doubles semifinals of the U. S. National Championships, Smith Court and Ken Fletcher defeated King and Donald Dell 5-7, 8-6, 6-4.

King continued to struggle in singles at Forest Hills, where she lost to unseeded Deidre Catt Keller McMahon in the fourth round.

Carole Caldwell Graebner and King teamed at Wimbledon and Forest Hills, but they lost early at both tournaments to Elizabeth Starkie Wagstaff and Catt Keller McMahon.

At the end of 1963, the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA) ranked King as the second-best American player in singles. The top 10 and King's win-loss singles record in 1963 against each of them were as follows:

1-2  (1) Darlene Hard

She won 3 singles titles and 2 women's doubles titles. She finished the year ranked second in the United States by the USLTA, behind only Darlene Hard. General Notes:

(1) This was the first year of the Federation Cup.

(2) William Scripps Kellogg (1897-1985) was the captain of the U. S. team.

Final Between the U. S. and Australia:

The final was played indoors on wood because of the threat of rain. Only 500 spectators were able to watch the final.

In a "crushing display of power that recalled the heyday of such greats as Pauline Betz and Maureen Connolly, Lanky Margaret Smith [Court] pulverized Miss Hard 6-3, 6-0" in the first singles match. "It was ruthless tennis of the highest order." The Australian broke Hard twice for a 4-0 lead in the first set, but Hard rallied by breaking, holding, and breaking again. On her own service, Hard had two game points at 3-4 (40-15) to tie the set. But then she double faulted twice, and the match was no contest thereafter. "The crowd whistled in wonder as a stream of winners flowed off Miss Smith's racquet."

King was given little chance to defeat Lesley Turner Bowrey in the second singles match. The Australian had already won the French International Championships and the Italian National Championships in 1963. And Turner Bowrey was seeded second while King was unseeded at Wimbledon, which would be starting in just a few days. King's service and volleys were very effective at the start of the match as she took a 5-4 lead. But then she made a number of mistakes that allowed Turner Bowrey to win the last 3 games of that set. In the second set, King's serve was "booming into the corners ... and ace after ace caught Lesley off guard. She was completely in charge now, hammering her ground strokes ... with confidence." King won the second set 6-0 and had little trouble in the third set.

In the deciding doubles match that lasted almost 2 hours, King and Hard were paired for the first time in Federation Cup because "both have built their reputation on doubles." Smith Court was paired with Turner Bowrey instead of Jan Lehane O'Neil because the latter had a pulled thigh muscle.

King was slow to get to the net and late on her volleys in the first set, causing her to get broken both times she served. The Americans lost that set quickly. Several times in the second set, the American team was on the verge of defeat. Smith Court served for the match at 5-4, but Hard's coolness and experience saved the day. She hit a series of volleys and passing shots to break serve and level the set at 5-5.

U. S. team results:

1R  U. S. defeated Italy, 3-0
QF  U. S. defeated The Netherlands, 3-0
SF  U. S. defeated the United Kingdom, 3-0
FN  U. S. defeated Australia, 2-1

SF  d. Christine Truman Janes 6-3, 3-6, 6-4
FN  d. Lesley Turner Bowrey 5-7, 6-0, 6-3

King's win in the final prevented Australia from clinching the Federation Cup.

In the final, Margaret Smith Court built a 4-0, two-break lead in the second set. King did not crumble, however. She won 4 of the next 5 games and served at 4-5 to prolong the match. But unlike one year earlier when nerves consumed her, Smith Court courageously hit 4 forehand winners to break King's serve and win the championship.

King defeated Ann Haydon Jones in the semifinals by constantly being on the attack.

King won the first 11 points of her quarterfinal match with Maria Bueno.

The start of the final was delayed by rain.

King overwhelmed Judy Alvarez in the first set. "Miss Moffitt may have taken too much for granted from the ease with which she was winning. At any rate, her game fell off badly in the second set. She was poking her forehand into the net. Her fine backhand failed her and and she was going in to volley on inadequate approach shots and being passed or forced into errors. Miss Alvarez ... scrambled so effectively that repeatedly she scored with her replies to drop shots that appeared beyond redemption.... In the third set the Californian's control sagged on the return of service and her service weakened, too."

General Notes:

(1) King's singles match with Christine Truman Janes began immediately after Ann Haydon Jones's stunning and demoralizing defeat of Darlene Hard. She had lead in the third set 3-0 (40-0) on her own serve after winning 9 consecutive games, with victory seemingly guaranteed. But after a 14-point game that saw Haydon Jones change tactics and simply refuse to make errors, the Brit  broke serve. Thereafter, Hard could win points only at great effort in punishing rallies. She served for the match at 5-3 but double faulted and made 2 backhand volley errors to allow Haydon Jones to stay in the match. Hard served again for the match at 6-5, but another double fault helped Haydon Jones to tie the set at 6-6. With Haydon Jones serving in the next game, Hard's errors allowed her to win her service at love for a 7-6 lead. In the last game, Hard double faulted yet again and hit a high volley into the net to lose the match 6-1, 0-6, 8-6.

(2) The 36 games played in the second set of the King versus Truman Janes singles match remains the highest number of games ever played in a set of women's singles.

(3) Margaret Osborne DuPont was the captain of the U. S. team.

Result:

United Kingdom d. United Kingdom, 6-1

King in singles:

d. Christine Truman Janes 6-4, 19-17 (46 games)

In the first set of her singles match with Christine Truman Janes, King volleyed superbly behind her effective first serve and overcame the British girl's harder hitting. But King's service began to fail her in the second set, with Truman Janes hammering back King's second serves and lobbing effectively. King squandered 3 break point opportunities at 7-7 (0-40). With King serving at 15-16, she saved 2 set points with a backhand volley and a spin serve to the Brit's backhand. Finally, after 1 hour, 40 minutes of play in the second set, King held serve to win the match.

King in women's doubles with Darlene Hard:

d. Ann Haydon Jones / Christine Truman Janes 4-6, 7-5, 6-2

After her singles match concluded, King was allowed a short rest period before this doubles match started. The British team was close to victory when they had a break point at 5-5 in the second set. But the Americans held serve and then broke serve to win the set. Their momentum continued in the third set as they built an insurmountable 5-0 lead.

King in singles:

d. Ann Haydon Jones 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 (dead rubber)

King's singles match with Haydon Jones was a dead rubber, as the U. S. had already clinched the tie.
