1964 Ranking Year (Age 20)

King serving to Ann Haydon Jones during their Wightman Cup match at Wimbledon.

Another year passed without Billie Jean Moffitt (later King) winning her first Grand Slam singles title. At the end of 1964, Lance Tingay at the London Daily Telegraph ranked King seventh in the world.

She again lost to Margaret Smith Court at Wimbledon, this time in the semifinals. The Australian also defeated King at the Federation Cup in Philadelphia.

Nancy Richey surprisingly won 2 of 3 singles matches with King on grass: the quarterfinals of the U. S. National Championships and the final of the Piping Rock Invitational. In her lone win on grass, King needed 35 games to defeat Richey in the final of the Eastern Grass Court Championships 7-5, 3-6, 8-6. For the year, King had a 1-3 record against the Texan.

King lost only 7 singles matches all year. Her other losses in singles were to Maria Bueno and Carole Caldwell Graebner.

At the end of the year, King decided to become a full time tennis player and spent 3 months in Australia so that Mervyn Rose could revamp her major weaknesses - forehand and serve. For more details, refer to the summary of her results in 1965.

In women's doubles, King's partnership with Karen Hantze Susman resumed at Wimbledon. They won 5 titles together, including the U. S. National Doubles  Championships. They also won all 4 of their Federation Cup matches, including a hard fought victory over the Wimbledon champions Smith Court and Lesley Turner Bowrey.

At the end of the year, the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA) gave King a singles ranking of second among U. S. players, behind only Nancy Richey. According to the USLTA Yearbook, King played 11 singles tournaments and had a 49-7 win-loss record during the 1964 ranking year.

The USLTA also ranked King and Hantze Susman as the best American women's doubles team.

Nancy Richey took a one-service break, 3-0 lead in the third set of her finals match with King. There were no breaks of serve during the next three games, so Richey served with a 4-2 lead. But she lost her serve in that game, which was followed by two consecutive breaks. This made it necessary for King to hold serve at 4-5 to stay in the match. She had a game point at (40-30), but Richey won that point and the next two points to end the match. King lost the first set because she was not able to break Richey's serve after losing her own serve in the fourth game and falling behind 1-3. King played very well in the second set while running away to a two-break, 5-0 lead. This was Richey's second win in three singles matches with King so far this year.

King jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set of her semifinal match with Carole Caldwell Graebner. The latter pulled within 5-3 but could not prevent King from winning the set. She appeared to have an insurmountable 6-3, 3-1 lead in the second set, but the third seed then won 5 consecutive games to level the match at one set apiece. The streakiness of the match continued in the third set as King quickly built a 3-0 lead. But Caldwell Graebner could not stage another rally. This was King's second win out of three singles matches with her friend and rival during 1964.

In the quarterfinals, Julie Heldman served to win the first set while up a service break at 7-6. But King then won 6 consecutive games to claim the set and establish a one-break,
3-0 lead in the second set.

General Note:

Margaret Smith Court and John Newcombe won the mixed doubles title. Most notable were the 177 games they played over 5 rounds. The first round was a quick 6-3, 6-1 (16 games) victory. The second round was a more complicated 10-8, 12-10 (40 games) squeaker. The quarterfinal match with Justina Bricka Horwitz and Fritz Froehling was an outrageously long 21-19, 10-12, 6-1 (69 games) fitness-tester. The semifinalists barely worked up a sweat during their 15-game match (6-1, 6-2). The final with Judy Tegart Dalton and Ed Rubinoff was tight, but the "marathoners" deservedly prevailed 10-8, 4-6, 6-3 (37 games).

This was Smith Court"s fourth U. S. mixed doubles title in four attempts. This year, she extended her winning streak to 19 matches. The most amazing fact, however, is that she would remain undefeated for ... 9 ... more ... years. Although she did not play this event during 4 of the intervening years, her winning streak reached 39 matches before arch-rival Billie Jean King teamed with Owen Davidson to defeat her and Marty Riessan in the 1973 final 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. Smith Court retired with 8 U. S. mixed doubles titles and an incredible win-loss record of 42-2, 95.5%.
