1969 (Age 25-26)

Accepting condolences from Ann Haydon Jones, who had just upset King in the Wimbledon final.

Billie Jean King's quality of play in 1969 was not up to her standards from the previous three years, probably because she was still recovering from knee surgery in the fall of 1968 and because she had a painful elbow for seven months beginning in February.

This was the first year since 1965 that King did not win at least one Grand Slam singles title. She lost to Margaret Smith Court at the Australian Open, Lesley Turner Bowrey at the French Open, Ann Haydon Jones at Wimbledon, and Nancy Richey at the US Open. Other than the South African Open, King did not win an important singles tournament. In women's doubles and mixed doubles, King played all the Grand Slam tournaments without winning a title and reached only one final.

King started the year with four tournaments in Australia and New Zealand. She entered a total of ten tournanent events in singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Her only titles, however, were in women's doubles in both Hobart, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand. Her greatest rival, Smith Court, went undefeated against King at these tournaments, winning once in singles, twice in women's doubles, and once in mixed doubles. For the year, King went 1-8 against Smith Court in the three disciplines.

Listed below are 27 singles tournaments, 13 of which King won. Her win-loss record as listed below is 70-14
(26-7 on grass, 17-1 on hard courts, 12-1 indoors, 8-4 on clay, and 7-1 on unknown surfaces).

Based on her results throughout 1969, Lance Tingay at the London Daily Telegraph ranked King third in the world, behind Smith Court and Haydon Jones.

The United States Lawn Tennis Association determined that King was ineligible for a U. S. ranking because she was a professional player.

General Notes:

(1) The organizers of this tournament had capitulated to demands from the promoters of the two professional tours, George McCall and Lamar Hunt, for expense money in addition to the official prize money. The promoters said that their players might boycott the tournament should the expense money be denied. In contrast, the organizers of the Victorian Championships in Melbourne refused to pay it. The leading professional players then decided to skip that tournament.

(2) The singles semifinal between King and Rosemary Casals was followed immediately by the women's doubles final with King and Casals on the same team. The day's total game count for King and Casals was 81.

King in singles, [1] seed:

1R  bye
2R  d. Norma Eastburn 6-1, 6-0
3R  d. Norma Marsh 6-2, 6-1
QF  d. [8]  Judy Tegart Dalton 6-3, 6-2
SF  lost to [6]  Rosemary Casals 6-3, 5-7, 7-5

King saved four match points at 3-5 in the second set of the singles semifinal with Rosemary Caaals. King then won the last four games of that set. Casals jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set. King eliminated that lead by again wnning four consecutive games, enabling her to serve for the match at 5-4. Casals immediately broke back when the game score was 30-40. She then held serve for a 6-5 lead, and won the match by breaking serve again.

King in women's doubles with Rosemary Casals, [1] seed:

1R  bye
2R  d. Sue Alexander / Sandra Walsham
6-1, 7-5
QF  d. Kaye Dening Bradshaw / Norma Marsh 6-2, 6-1

FN  [2]  lost to Margaret Smith Court / Judy Tegart Dalton 15-13, 4-6, 6-3 (47 games)

With minimal rest since the end of their singles semifinal, King and Casals walked back onto the court for the women's doubles final. King and Casals were visibly fatigued after losing the 28-game first set (and 61st game of the afternoon) to Margaret Smith Court and Judy Tegart Dalton. Although King and Casals won the second set, the Australians won the deciding set and the title. King and Casals split A$300 for finishing second.

King played well during the final with Margaret Smith Court until King became upset with spectators applauding her double fault at 2-2 (30-30) in the first set. She mockingly clapped back and then lost her serve. King won only 3 of the remaining 12 games of the match. The final lasted only 57 minutes.

The semifinal was played in blistering 104° F (40° C) heat. Ann Haydon Jones became distracted as "latecomers wandered from their seats" during points.

In the second round, King and 17 year old Evonne Goolagong Cawley played each other for the first time.

Haydon Jones received US$800 (inflation-adjusted to US$5,700 in March 2019 dollars) for finishing second, Durr US$600 (inflation-adjusted to US$4,250 in March 2019 dollars) for finishing third, and Gibson Darben US$500 (inflation-adjusted to US$3,500 in March 2019 dollars) for finishing fourth.

Gibson Darben was 41 years old, and this was her first tournament in 10 years. Her last match before now was in Cleveland in 1960 against Pauline Betz Addie, after both had turned professional. Gibson Darben said after her first match here, "I felt good. I just couldn't return service at all. The court was very fast, and I wasn't getting my racquet back quick enough." There were no service breaks in the second set until Gibson Darben lost her service in the 11th game and fell behind 5-6. Haydon Jones then served out the match.

King won this singles title for the third time in the last four years.

King won the first set of the final even though most points were lengthy baseline duels that fit Nancy Richey's playing style more than King's. King was more aggressive about getting to the net in the second set. Her widely angled overhead smashes were particularly effective during that set. The were no breaks of serve in that set until King broke for a 5-4 lead. While serving for the title, King saved two break points at 15-40. Richey saved a match point later during that game. King hit an overhead smash to win the title on her second match point. The final lasted only 1 hour, 10 minutes.

After losing the singles final to Ann Haydon Jones, King retreated to the locker room. Fellow players said she blinked back tears and let loose "with a few choice words" about her game and the way the Wimbledon multitude blemished a record of sportsmanship almost a century old. She told reporters, "I knew they would be for Ann. I prepared myself mentally. What I didn't like was the way they were calling some of my shots 'out' 'out.' It got so I didn't know if the linesman or the crowd wqere calling the shots." Haydon Jones said she was "more than a little embarrassed" about the crowd's behavior. As for the match itself, King said, "I let her off the hook so many times. So many times I could kick myself." Haydon Jones agreed, "I got better, she got worse, and she made quite a few mistakes." Choking back tears, King said, "All I could think of was that it was the Fourth of July and how I really wanted to win Wimbledon four times in a row and do something for the good old USA."

King lost only 18 points while demolishing Rosemary Casals in a 28 minute semifinal. Casals seemed "scared stiff" and won only 12 points in the first set and 6 points in the second. "It's the Old Lady's House," she had said of her partner before the match. Casals never got her foot in the door.

(1) King said during the tournament, "It has been a bad year for me. My left knee has been OK, but I have been bothered by a severe tennis elbow for seven months. I expect to have a real big year in 1970, though, because I really have the motivation now. I feel like a kid again.

(2) Darlene Hard was seeded eighth in singles. She won 2 matches to reach the quarterfinals, where she lost to top-seeded Ann Haydon Jones 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.

(3) Hard also reached the quarterfinals in women's doubles with Nancy Richey. Hard had just won the U. S. Open women's doubles title with Françoise Durr. In a comeback for the ages, they defeated Margaret Smith Court and Virginia Wade in the final there after trailing 0-6, 0-2.

SF  d. [2]  Nancy Richey 6-3, 6-3
FN  d. [1]  Ann Haydon Jones 6-2, 6-3

In the final, King broke Wimbledon champion Ann Haydon Jones's serve in the first, third, and fifth games of the 24-minute first set while losing her own serve only in the second game. King broke serve in the first and last games of the 33-minute second set. King's prize money was US$1,500 ($10,650 in March 2021 dollars), far less than the US$4,000 ($28,400 in March 2021 dollars) won by the men's singles titlist, Pancho Gonzalez.

In the semifinals, King once again played her fierce and higher-seeded rival Nancy Richey, who had just ousted King from the US Open in a straight-sets quarterfinal. This time, King quickly took the lead and dominated the first set. She momentarily faltered when serving for the set at 5-1, giving-up one of her two service breaks in hand. But she did not falter the second time, winning the set 6-2. The second set was very similar to the first. King served for the match with a comfortable two-break lead at 5-2, but Richey stiffened and won the game. King showed her grit in the very next game, however, when she broke Richey to win tbe match.

King in women's doubles with Rosemary Casals:

2R  d. ____ Beale / ____ Trumbull 6-1, 6-1

In the quarterfinals, King got her second victory out of two career matches against the team of Louise Brough Clapp (one of the all-time greatest players in singles and women's doubles) and Barbara Green Weigandt. The previous match, in partnership with Karen Hantze Susman, was in 1961.
