1970 (Age 26-27)

Billie Jean King was overshadowed by Margaret Smith Court's Grand Slam and hampered by a severe knee injury that necessitated surgery immediately after Wimbledon.

She did, however, win the singles titles at the Italian Open, the Natal Open, and the British Covered Courts Championships. She also won the women's doubles titles at Wimbledon, the Italian Open, the South African Open, the Natal Open, and the British Covered Courts Championships. She won the mixed doubles titles at the French Open, the British Hard Court Championships, and the Natal Open. She also was the runner-up in singles at Wimbledon and the South African Open and in women's doubles at the French Open.

King won all her matches during the Wightman Cup competition, which was played this year at Wimbledon. With the United States one match from defeat, she won her singles match to send the tie into a winner-take-all doubles match. Down 0-2 in the third set, King and her partner won the last 6 games of the match to win the cup.

Against Smith Court, King was 6-6 overall: 2-4 in singles, 2-1 in women's doubles, and 2-1 in mixed doubles.

Listed below are 19 singles tournaments (8 of which she won and 4 of which she was the runner-up) plus Wightman Cup. Her win-loss record in singles as listed below was 54-11, 83.08% (11-3 indoor, 10-1 grass, 19-5 clay, 14-2 hard).

The United States Lawn Tennis Association ranked King first in the United States for the year. Lance Tingay at the Daily Telegraph in London ranked her second in the world, behind only Margaret Smith Court.

Week of February 2, 1970
International Tennis Players
Association Indoor Open

Indoors (Uniturf)

General Note:

This tournament also was known as the "World Tennis Magazine Luv Cup."

Draw:

The draw included only 8 women.

King in singles, [2] seed:

1R  d. Jane "Peaches" Bartkowicz 6-2, 4-6, 6-0
SF  d. [3] Nancy Richey 6-4, 7-5
FN  lost to [1] Margaret Smith Court 6-3, 7-6(12)

Margaret Smith Court won the 26-point second set tiebreaker and the title. King saved 2 match points and Smith Court saved 6 set points in that tiebreaker. Earlier in that set, King lost a 4-1 lead. The final was televised and was the first women's match to feature a tiebreaker. Attendance was 8,820. Smith Court earned US$3,000 (US$20,300 in November 2019 dollars).

In her semifinal match with King, Nancy Richey could not hold her leads of 3-0 in the first set and 5-2 in the second set. King won the match with topspin lobs and by out-rallying Richey from the baseline.

One week later, Smith Court said about the final here, "I think the final Billie Jean and I played ... created a lot of interest. ... I think people are finding that when ... the top eight girls in the world [play], [we play] interesting tennis...."

General Note:

In the first round, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, the Wimbledon singles champion 16 months hence, lost to Françoise Durr 6-2, 6-3.

Draw:

The draw included 12 women, 4 of whom were seeded. Seven of the world's top 10 played.

King in singles, [2] seed:

1R  bye
QF  d. Winnie Shaw Wooldridge 6-4, 7-5
SF  d. [4] Virginia Wade 6-3, 6-3
FN  d. [1] Margaret Smith Court 6-2, 4-6, 6-3

King's serve-and-volley game was in top gear during her final round defeat of Margaret Smith Court. The Australian appeared disinterested, with King repeatedly catching her flat-footed. Smith Court had not lost a match at the White City Stadium since 1962. The final lasted 1 hour, 45 minutes (just under 4 minutes per game). King's prize money was a mere $1,500 compared to the $5,000 won by the men's titlist.

Week of March 23, 1970
South African Open
Ellis Park
Johannesburg, South Africa
Hard

King in singles, [3] seed:

1R  d. Rita Smith 6-1, 6-2
2R  d. Bernice Carr Vukovich 6-2, 6-1
3R  d. [14] Lesley Hunt 6-4, 6-1
QF  d. [NS] Marianne Brummer 6-3, 6-3
SF  d. [7] Rosemary Casals 6-3, 6-2
FN  lost to [1] Margaret Smith Court 6-4, 1-6, 6-3

In the final, Margaret Smith Court broke King's serve in the seventh game of the first set and then, three games later, served a love game to win the set 6-4. Helped by Smith Court's three double faults in the second set, "the American came back with a dazzling performance that gave her the ... set in only 13 minutes." The 10 minute break between the second and third sets appeared to help Smith Court as she held serve for a 1-0 lead. In the next game, King's frustration with a close line call coupled with an inopportune double fault enabled Smith Court to break serve for a 2-0 lead. Although the Australian's serving problems continued during the third set, King was unable to capitalize.

Giant killer Rosemary Casals had overwhelmed second-seeded Ann Haydon Jones in their quarterfinal match. But she was unable to repeat that performance in the semifinals as King beat her in straight sets.

King's quarterfinal round opponent, Marianne Brummer, had upset sixth-seeded Judy Tegart Dalton in the previous round and eleventh-seeded Helen Gourlay Cawley in the second round. Not wanting to be the third consecutive seeded player to lose to the unseeded South African, King played well and easily won the match.

King in women's doubles with Rosemary Casals, [3] seed:

1R  d. Evelyne Terras / Alice Tym 6-1, 6-1
2R  d. Franzie Alberts / I. Cuypers 6-0, 6-2
QF  d. [NS] Helen Gourlay Cawley / Patricia Walkden Pretorius 6-3, 3-6, 6-0
SF  d. [2] Virginia Wade / Ann Haydon Jones 6-1, 3-6, 6-4
FN  d. [4] Kerry Melville Reid / Karen Krantzcke 6-2, 6-2

In an epic semifinal, Kerry Melville Reid & Karen Krantzcke upset top-seeded Margaret Smith Court & Judy Tegart Dalton 11-13, 6-4, 6-3 (43 games). But they were no match for King and Rosemary Casals in the anticlimatic final. They lost only two out of twelve sets and 28 out of 94 games on their way to the title.

King in mixed doubles with Robert Hewitt, [4] seed:

1R  bye
2R  d. Karin Boshoff / D____ Sullivan  6-4, 6-1
3R  d. Winnie Shaw Wooldridge / Colin Dibley 7-5, 6-1
QF  d. [NS] Virginia Wade / Roger Taylor 6-4, 6-3
SF  lost to [1] Margaret Smith Court / Marty Riessen 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 (38 games)

Hard

General Notes:

(1) Billie Jean King won all 3 titles, defeating Margaret Smith Court in all 3 finals.

(2) Virginia Wade, seeded fourth, shockingly lost her preliminary round singles match in straight sets. Rosemary Casals defaulted her first round singles match in protest of her sixth seeding.

King in singles, [2] seed:

PR  bye
1R  d. Heloise Burger 6-1, 6-1
2R  d. [15] Marianne Brummer 6-2, 6-0
QF  d. [7] Judy Tegart Dalton 6-1, 6-3
SF  d. [3] Ann Haydon Jones 6-3, 4-6, 6-1
FN  d. [1] Margaret Smith Court 6-4, 2-6, 6-2

During the final, windy conditions advantaged King because she was able to control her ground strokes with top spin while Margaret Smith Court was limited to flat shots. A disputed line call helped King close out the first set. Smith Court dominated the second set. King broke serve twice to run away with the final set.

King in women's doubles with Rosemary Casals:

FN  d. Margaret Smith Court / Judy Tegart Dalton 7-5, 6-3

King in mixed doubles with Robert Hewitt:

FN  d. Margaret Smith Court / Marty Riessen 6-3, 6-4

For the second time in 2 weeks, King and Robert Hewitt played a mixed doubles final against Margaret Smith Court and Marty Riessen. But this time, King and Hewitt won easily.

General Note:

(1) The singles draw included 38 women, with 6 of them playing in a preliminary round.

(2) The other seeded players were: #3 Kerry Melville Reid, #5 Karen Krantzcke, #6 Rosemary Casals, #7 Françoise Durr, and #8 Judy Tegart Dalton.

King in singles, [1] seed:

PR  bye
1R  d. Graziella Perna 6-1, 6-2
2R  d. Christina Sandberg 9-7, 6-0
QF  d. Helga Niessen Masthoff 1-6, 6-2, 6-4

SF  Center Court: d. [4] Virginia Wade 3-6, 7-5, 6-3
FN  d. [2] Julie Heldman 6-1, 6-3

A heavy crosswind constantly bothered the first service of defending champion Julie Heldman in the final with King. She was broken 3 times in each set. King also used drop shots frequently to win points. After Heldman took a one-break, 3-1 lead in the second set, King swept the next 5 games to win her first major title on clay. Afterwords, King declared that she would not play again in Rome until the prize money improved. She won US$600 (US$4,000 in November 2019 dollars) compared to the US$3,500 (US$23,400 in November 2019 dollars) won by men's singles titlist Ilie Nastase.

The last game of the second set of the semifinal with Virginia Wade lasted 22 minutes and had 21 deuces (22 deuces per The New York Times) and 48 points (50 points per The New York Times). In that game, Wade saved 7 set points and had 16 game points before King won the game and the set. This was probably the longest game ever played between women. Earlier in that set, King saved three match points at 4-5.

King in women's doubles with Rosemary Casals:

1R  bye
2R  d. Lucia Bassi / Madeleine Pegel 6-0, 6-3

QF  lost to [7] Helga Niessen Masthoff 2-6, 8-6, 6-1

King "was magnificent in the first set" of her quarterfinal with Helga Niessen Masthoff. But King failed to win any of her 18 break point opportunities in the second set. In three games of that set, Niessen Masthoff held serve after trailing 0-40. In the last game of that set, King made 3 forehand errors before Niessen Masthoff passed King to win the set. King broke serve in the first game of the third set. But cramps in both legs crippled her movement, allowing the West German to win the last 6 games of the match.
